Shoes

I can’t control myself, I had a thought while on the bus this morning, and it has stayed with me until now.   Two posts in two days.  Is blogoholism a condition?

I have been recently contemplating the subtle messages in our daily going onings, and how they are reflections of our lives (maybe because the daily going onings ARE our lives).

I started to think of the simile, life is like shoes.  Let me explain.

Example 1:

Shoes: We see a pair of shoes in a store window and we love them.  We enter the store, but they don’t have our size.

Life: We see something that we would really love to do.  We try to get invited into it, but the opportunity doesn’t really fall into our laps.

Shoes: Do you look for the shoes at another store?  Or are you distracted by the next window?

Life:  Do you pursue what it is you really want to do, or are you distracted by something else?  Is this distraction a buffer between you and failure?

Example 2:

Shoes: We see a pair of shoes in a store window and we love them.  We try them on, but they don’t fit well.

Life:  We really want to like/be good at something, but in order to somewhat enjoy it (this is usually momentarily for the example given) we have to pretend, because it doesn’t fit well.

Shoes:  Do you buy the shoes?  Or leave disappointed?

Life:  How long do you keep up the act?  How long should you?

Example 3: (this one is my favorite)

Shoes:  We see a pair of shoes we love.  We try them on.  They feel great.  We buy them.  They give us a blister after wearing them.

Life:  We try on a new roll, taking a new class, seeking out new relationships and situations.  Situations rarely end up taking shape in the way we imagined.  They often leave us etched with a little mark (sometimes in our egos).

Shoes:  Do you get a band-aid?  Do you form a callus? Do you get rid of the shoes?

Life:  Do you patch up situations?  Do you strengthen your own skin?  Do you eliminate the abrasive situations in your life?

Example 4:

Shoes:  You like your friends shoes.

Life:  You like your friends life.

Shoes:  Do you ask your friend were s/he got them?  Is it the type of friend that will care if you have the same shoes?

Life:  Do you ask your friend what makes them happy in their life?  Do you ask them for some direction so that you can shape your life in a similar way?  Does your friend offer to help? Or do you need some new friends?

And now … my relationship to shoes has changed.  I can tell you this, I like wearing Havianas the best (lots of room to breathe, low maintenance, low fuss), I am addicted to runners (comfortable and take a pounding), I have a love/hate relationship with heels (love feeling sexy, hate feeling restricted) and boots, well I have found just three pairs in the last 20 years of searching to fit over my calves.  I’ll let you form your own conclusions there; I got nothing!

I don't own these yet, but I do love them.

I own these.  And so does a very good friend!

For the daily going onings!

I dare you to take a good gander at your shoes now; and then, take a good look at your life!  What do YOU see?  LOL

Namaste!

Note:   “onings”  is not a word, but I think it should be.  I think “daily going onings”  sounds superior to daily episodes, daily events, or daily incidents.

What they said:

A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.  ~ Charles Spurgeon

Creativity often consists of merely turning up what is already there. Did you know that right and left shoes were thought up only a little more than a century ago? ~ Bernice Fitz-Gibbon

I thought I would dress in baggy pants, big shoes, a cane and a derby hat. Everything a contradiction: the pants baggy, the coat tight, the hat small and the shoes large.  ~Charlie Chaplin
